Anna was born in either Germany or New York - she listed both alternately on various records throughout her life. Her biological father, John Horack, took her to the Children's Aid Society in November 1882 because he was unable to care for her after the death of her mother. She was almost immediately sent on an orphan train from New York to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where she was adopted by Franklin Amos Blackmer and his wife, Frances "Franc" Wedge Blackmer.

Anna married Frank F. Gillrup and and was mother of Frank Gilrup Jr., who died in infancy, and Lillis Margaret Gillrup.
