Malcolm James Laing, 83, died Sunday, September 19th 2010, following a long illness. He was born August 1st, 1927, in his family's homestead, Perrysburg, Ohio, where he was a life long resident. As a boy Malcolm delivered milk in the morning before school, exercised polo horses, and helped on the family farm. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II as a Fireman First Class on the USS OZARK LSV 2. While enlisted, he received the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. After the War, Malcolm took flying lessons at Metcalf field earning both glider and instrument licenses. He built the bi plane and glider he later flew. He then spent time in Canada as a hunting and fishing guide. He and his father were partners in James Laing and Son Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 1991. Malcolm was a lifelong member of the Royal Arch Masons, Northwest Ohio Shriners, The American Legion, and The Perrysburg Township Volunteer Fire Department. Malcolm married Bessie Bays in 1950 and together they had two children: a son, James Douglas Laing and daughter, Patti Anne Laing. They divorced in 1957. In 1962, he married his current wife of 48 years, Mariann Louise Wortman. They were married in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, by her Father Reverend Otto Wortman. They had a son, Mark Alan Laing. He is survived by his loving wife, Mariann (Wortman) Laing, children James Douglas Laing, Patti Ann Laing, and Mark Alan Laing. He was preceded in death by his father, James B. Laing, mother, Gladys R. (Davenport) Laing, and brother, Edward F. Laing.
