When George Washington Farmer was born on December 23, 1839, his father, Thomas, was 30 and his mother, Mary, was 28. He married Elizabeth Philamena Chandler and they had two children together. Elizabeth died in childbirth with their second child, Kathleen "Kate" Farmer. One year later the older daughter, Mary, passed away at age 3. Kate was sent to be raised by her maternal grandfather, Joseph Chandler. George then married Lydia Jane "Lauria" Burnett and they had two daughters together, Evalena
Evalena "Eva" Farmer and Margaret Mae "Maggie" Farmer. He died on March 7, 1876, in Brady, Texas, at the age of 36. Lydia remarried and had a long life and many more children.

Kate grew up with her grandfather and married Thomas Morgan. She and Tom had a son together, Tom, who lived for only two days. Kate's life took some interesting turns after that. She ended up committing suicide by gunshot at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, California on 29 November 1892, under the assumed name of “Lottie A. Bernard”. Her grandfather, Joseph Chandler would later correctly identify her. She is storied to be the ghost who haunts the hotel.
