Jim was born June 13, 1927 in Madison, KS the son of Jesse W Hummel Sr. and Mary L (Rose) Hummel. They preceded him in death as did a sister Clara Kingen and two brothers Jesse Jr and Bobby Hummel.
Jim was united in marriage to Carolyn Zinn on April 14, 1949. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2006. He is survived by three children, Jean Worden, Overbrook, KS; James R Hummel Jr, Topeka, KS; Julia Moss(Frank), Kansas City, KS. Five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Jim served in the Navy from 1945 – 1948. He worked at Metropolitan Life from 1949 – 1968; SBL 1968 – 1988; and Fireman’s Fund 1980 – 1995. He then retired to Las Vegas, NV and worked for Sam’s Town Casino playing poker for 17 years.
Jim loved to tell jokes, play poker, golf, and hunt. He was blessed with a special friend of over 50 years, Mike Stalcup. He enjoyed his weekly visits. He loved the caregivers at Brookside Retirement Community and Grace Hospice. He had nicknames for some of them.
A sharing of memories and a celebration of his life will be held May 9, 10AM at Brookside Community Room in Overbrook, KS. Interment at a later date in Henderson, NV.
