As far as we know, Mary was the firstborn of Richard Walton Gwin and his bride, Nancy Elizabeth Watkins Gwin. They would leave Mary's birthplace, Harrison Co., IN, some five years into their marriage and travel across Illinois to settle for a couple of years near the Mississippi River. Then they would uproot and cross the river to Iowa, settling near the community of Richmond in English River Township, Washington County, Iowa. Finally, the Gwins moved to the frontier of east Kansas, settling near Independence in Montgomery County. At least fifteen siblings would follow Mary, some born, as she, in Indiana, some in Illinois, but most in Iowa before the final move to Kansas.

Long before that final move, however, Mary had married Gideon Bear, and their family would remain in English River Township where all of her 14 known children would be born and raised. Mary would die and be buried there as well. There is indication that Gideon Bear may have increased his own land holdings by acquiring the home and land of Mary's parents, Richard and Nancy, when they moved to Kansas.
