Eliza "Lida M." Louisa Gwin, was born April 1838 in Iowa. She died sometime after 1910 and is buried, according to family lore, in City Cemetery, Neodesha, Wilson County, Kansas, though no one I know has ever seen her grave. My fifth cousin Teresa Perry said that she thinks it was her dad who told her that Eliza's grave is there, all right, but it's "away from the others' and hard to find".

Eliza was married first before 1860, according to Orley Bush Gwin's notes, to Henry William "Will" Lane, who was born in 1828 in Ohio. Will died 1 June 1883 in Liberty, Lucas Co., Iowa. He is buried in Niswender Pioneer Cemetery, Oakley, Lucas Co., Iowa--Find A Grave Memorial# 40695001. His gravestone reads, "Henry W. Lane, Co. K, 30 Ia. Inf., died June 1, 1883, aged 55 years." Eliza and Will only had one child, John Gwin Lane. When Will divorced Eliza between 1855 and 1860, he kept baby John, then married Clarissa Tatman Godlove.

Meanwhile, Eliza returned to live with her parents, by this time living in southeast Kansas. She married second shortly after returning to her parents, about 1859-60, to Ezra T. Wells. Wells was born in Ohio 17 Oct 1834, but his gravestone says 1833. He died 30 Jul 1904, according to his headstone, and is buried in Neodesha Cemetery, Neodesha, Wilson Co., Kansas--Find A Grave Memorial# 86080830. Wells served as Justice of the Peace and Probate Judge.

We only know of two children of Eliza's, both of whom were still living in 1910, according to her testimony in that census. They are the aforementioned John Gwin Lane, who married Emma Mumford and gave Eliza seven grandchildren, and Albert L. Wells who married Mary L. Dorr and gave Eliza at least three more grandchildren.

Eliza is my own first cousin four times removed. Her father, Richard W. Gwin, and my ggg-grandfather, John Gwin, were brothers.

Much more can be seen at our page for her and her descendants:
