Wendell James Kahler, age 84 of Jacksonville, TX, passed away Friday morning, October 12, 2018, in Tyler, TX.

A Mass of Christian burial for Wendell Kahler is scheduled at 10 o’clock in the morning, Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Jacksonville. Officiant is Father Patrick Hartnett. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at 9 o’clock in the morning also at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Mr. Kahler will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Marengo, Iowa on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Visitation in Marengo will be from 10 to 12 o’clock in the morning at Kloster Funeral Home. The procession to Calvary Cemetery will commence at noon followed by a brief Graveside Service. Following burial, a 1:00 PM luncheon will be served at the hall of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo.

Mr. Kahler was born May 5th, 1934 in Ladora, Iowa to August A. and Irma Kahler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years Carole Kahler; grandson Andy Denning; brothers Bill Ward, Lewis (Pat) Ward, and Everett Ward; sisters Juanita Ward, Doris Trimble, Beulah (Peggy) Coon, Naomi Goodman, and Elaine (Petey) Fischbach.

Wendell grew up in Marengo, Iowa and the surrounding area. He attended Marengo schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1953.

Wendell joined the United States Navy in 1954 and retired as Master Chief Petty Officer in 1982.

He married Carole Jean Jacobi October 23, 1954.

An accomplished woodworker and cabinetmaker, Wendell was an active member of the East Texas Woodturners Club in Tyler. Wendell earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Due to Mr. Kahler’s military career, the family resided in numerous places around the country finally, after retirement, locating to Jacksonville, TX.

Left to cherish his memory are sons Joe Kahler of Georgetown, TX, Jeff Kahler and wife Christine Sheehy of Queens Creek, AZ, Kurt Kahler of Jacksonville; daughter Lori McGuire and husband Jerry of Waxahachie, TX; and brother Wayne Kahler and wife Dorothy of Coralville, Iowa. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services in Jacksonville are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home of Jacksonville, TX.
