BIOGRAPHY

Sharon Gaye Grant Prince passed away at home in New Harmony, Utah, on March 16, 2018, at the age of eighty. Sharon was born March 12, 1938, in New Harmony, where she spent most of her life. She graduated from Cedar City High School in 1956. She received an associate of science degree in education from College of Southern Utah in 1958, and a bachelor of science in elementary education from Southern Utah State College in 1970. The college is now Southern Utah University. In 1960, Sharon married Kent D. Morris. They had two daughters, Elizabeth (Beth) and Linda. Sharon and Kent divorced in 1969. In 1971, she married Lowell D. Prince, a New Harmony native. Sharon and Lowell had a daughter, Talonnie. Lowell legally adopted Beth and Linda and raised them as his own. Sharon taught second grade in Hurricane for several years, and later she worked as a postmistress and as a preschool teacher.

Sharon loved children and had a tremendous talent for teaching. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting rugs. She was an active member of the New Harmony Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and she regularly served as a docent at the DUP museum in St. George. Sharon loved dancing, singing, playing guitar, and writing poetry. She performed dramatic readings at various civic events such as the New Harmony Valley Fourth of July celebration. She entertained people with her humorous skits as Aunt Sadie Claire. Sharon was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many Church callings, including counselor in the stake Primary presidency, ward Primary president, Primary teacher, nursery leader, and Relief Society teacher. Sharon was known for her wit, her outspokenness, and her beautiful smile. She loved popcorn, caffeine-free Diet Coke, and sitting on the porch in the summer looking at her beloved Kolob mountains.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Lowell Prince (New Harmony), and her daughters Elizabeth (Alan) Shepherd (Sparks, Nevada), Linda Gayle (South Jordan, Utah), and Talonnie (New Harmony). Sharon is also survived by her granddaughters, Amanda (Preston) Atkin (Cedar City, Utah) and Brooklin Shepherd (New Harmony), and two great-grandsons, Fox and Porter Atkin. Sharon also had several “adopted” children who loved her as their second mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara Naomi Farr Grant and George Albert Grant, and by her siblings: Afton (Lolene), Sheldon (Vada), Ina (Glen) O’Brien, Glenn (Masuko), Wilma (Johnny) Lynch, Rodney (Ruby), Richard (Aggie), and Dallas.

A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 23, at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 North 300 West, Cedar City, Utah 84720). There will be a viewing from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the New Harmony Ward chapel (12 North Main, New Harmony, Utah 84757).The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 24, at the New Harmony Ward chapel. Interment will take place in the New Harmony cemetery, under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
