Margaretha Kirstine (Kirschstein was the original German spelling) was the fifth born child of Johannes Kirschstein of Dieburg, Germany and Eleanora Herth from Minster.
In 1846 Margaretha's family sailed to New York, New York, USA, from Antwerp, Belgium on the ship Algeria. The ships manifesto lists the family: Johann Kirstein 41 Baker Eleanore 38 Sebastian 16 Andreas 14 Anna Maria 12 Johannes 10 Marguerite 8 Theresia 3
The family settled in Waterloo County and later on Lot 46, Concession 2 of the South Line of Brant.
Margaret married William Hawkins of Walkerton on the 14th of September 1860. Margaret and William were married by Robert C Moffat who was the United Presbyterian Church Minister. Margaret became a member of the United Presbyterian Church prior to her marriage. Her husband belonged to the English Church and the religious affiliation of the family was Episcopalian.
William Hawkins bought plots at the old cemetery according to Rev Fred Neill's records at Knox Presbyterian Church, Walkerton and they were all buried there.
Margaretha and William Hawkins had one daughter, Mary Jane who was born on the 4th of February 1862 in Walkerton and died in 1943 in St. Mary's, Ontario. She was married September 10, 1989 at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Toronto to Joseph Francis "Frank" Allen who was born on Nov 6, 1858. Frank had a butcher shop in St. Mary's, Ontario.
Mrs Hibbet was William Hawkins sister, she remarried Alex Sinclair in Southampton.
