Thomas “Hoppy” L. Cassidy, 80, of Benton Harbor, MI passed away March 28, 2017, at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM, Friday, March 31, 2017 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Tom will be laid to rest at Mitchell # 8 Cemetery in Cooter, MO at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Home or Hillsdale College. Tom was born November 7, 1936, in Cape Girardeau, MO to T. Leonard & Mildred Overturf Cassidy. He was a graduate of Benton Harbor High School, Class of 1955. Tom proudly served his country as a linguist in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a police officer for the cities of St. Joseph, Benton Township, and Benton Harbor during the 1960’s and early 70’s. Hoppy got out of the squad car and into a truck and retired from USF Holland after 29 years and millions of safe miles. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Mensa, and a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous, counting years of sobriety and carrying the medals he earned for them in his pocket everywhere he went. In his later years Tom enjoyed reading, watching movies and completing the NY Times crossword puzzle every day.

He is survived by his daughter Cammie (Mark Winnell) Hernandez of Watervliet; son Patrick (Eileen) Cassidy of Portland, OR; grandchildren Anthony Hernandez of Riverside and Caitlin Hernandez of St. Joseph; great – granddaughter Zoe Jane Blocker; uncle Col. A.J. Overturf of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, former spouses and good friends Connie Cassidy of St. Joseph and Janice Webber of Des Moines, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives Alice Hayes Cassidy and Lucille Sila Cassidy and siblings Patricia Cassidy and John Cassidy.
