Jean Delaney Cummins, 92, of Washington, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 7, 2016, in Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care, following a very brief illness.
She was born in Burton, West Virginia, daughter of the late Larney Delaney and Minnie Arlie Clovis. Jean was actually born fatherless due to his death in a sawmill accident during her mother’s pregnancy. This fact along with her birth on Feb. 29, 1924 as a “leap year baby” led to her life being followed locally for several years as a child.
She was a graduate of Clay-Battelle High School.
Jean’s work career started in WV in the 40’s making parts for the war effort in WWII and continued into the 90’s in retail sales in Monongahela. Life provided Jean with many challenges including surviving a direct tornado hit in 1958, but she dealt with most of them as just another day’s event.
She wrapped her life around God, family and country. In the early lives of her children she often said “it matters little what you have or where you come from, you can always be clean, hardworking, polite and mannerly”.
Jean was a member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church in Washington and viewed other parishioners as her extended family. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who really knew her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a great role model to all her grandchildren. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Monessen Chapter No. 205.
On August 11, 1943, she married George William Cummins Sr. of Wana, West Virginia who died May 11, 2005.
Surviving are a son George William Cummins Jr. of Brevard, NC; two grandsons, Matthew William Cummins and Rory Kipp (Tatiana) Cummins, a granddaughter Tracy Lauren (Will Davis) Cummins all of Charlotte, NC; one great-granddaughter Angelina Eleanor Cummins. Also surviving are brother Leon Delaney of Weirton, WV, sisters Mary Ellen Bell of Lakeland, FL and Martha Prince of Anaheim Hills, CA, and several nephews and nieces and very special visiting companions including niece Lynn Bell and her husband Danny Carroll.
Deceased in addition to her husband are a daughter, Brenda Sue Cummins Vuono and a brother Paul Delaney.
Friends will be received Saturday, August 13, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the time of service, at William G. Neal Funeral Home, 925 Allison Ave, Washington with Rev. Ross Pryor. Burial will follow in Pine Bank Cemetery.
