Sept. 22, 1913 — Feb. 15, 2008
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Dolleta Powell Goforth, 94, died at Adams Farm Living and Rehab Center in Greensboro.
Dolleta was born Sept. 22, 1913, to parents, Lora Biggerstaff Powell and William Cohen Powell of Cleveland County. Following high school graduation, she met and subsequently married John William Goforth of Stony Point. After several years, the couple and only child, Nancy Sue Goforth, moved to Gastonia where John worked for Plantation Pipeline, until his premature death in 1959. Dolleta remained in Gastonia for several years before moving to her family's home in Lawndale. There, she renewed her family and girlhood relationships and joined local organizations, including, Eastern Star and Polkville Methodist Church. In addition to community and family involvement, her greatest joy was tending to her gardens and flowers, and putting up canned goods that she generously shared with family and neighbors for decades. Independent of mind and spirit, Dolleta lived alone with self-reliant determination after her 90th birthday.
Her beloved husband, John and only sister, Mary Powell Whisnant preceded her in death.
Survivors include only child, Nancy Goforth Toomey and husband, Richard G. Jr., of Greensboro; granddaughter, Julia Toomey MacKenzie of Greenville; grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Toomey of Greensboro, John Richard Toomey and wife, Diane, of Collegeville, Pa.; and Richard G. Toomey III and wife, Amanda, of Greensboro.
Dolleta was blessed to know and delight in all of her great-grandchildren: Michael Wallace MacKenzie, Susan Blair MacKenzie and Mara Holland MacKenzie, all of Greenville, Allison Annette Toomey of Greensboro, Suzanne Caitlin Toomey and David Richard Toomey of Collegeville, and Sophia Madeline Toomey of Greensboro.
Visitation: The family will receive friends before and after graveside service.
Graveside service: Today at 2 p.m. at Beulah United Methodist Church
