S.S. Tuscania, carrying over 2,000 American troops, had crossed the Atlantic bound for Liverpool, when, on the morning of Tuesday, 5th. February, she was spotted and stalked in the North Channel by German submarine SM UB-77. Lt. Cdr. Wilhelm Meyer launched his attack about 6.40 p.m. under cover of darkness. Tuscania was struck by one of two torpedoes and sank within about four hours to the bottom of the Irish Sea. Approximately 210 of the troops and crew were lost, while many others, Pte. McAlister among them, were rescued by two British destroyers, Mosquito and Pigeon. Today Tuscania lies in 100 metres of water between Rathlin Island and Islay about 7 miles north of Rathlin Island.
