On September 11, 1948, in Our Lady of Hungary Church, he married Ellen M. Darmos, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Retired Commander Cindy (Chuck) Kovach-Fugate, USN, of O'Fallon, IL; a son, Gary Kovach of South Bend; three grandchildren, Justin Kovach, USMC, of Japan, Tracy Kovach and Jane Kovach, both of South Bend; and a sister, Emma Lou Leopold of South Bend.
Gene was preceded in death by a son, Alan Kovach; and two brothers, Robert Kovach and Joseph Kovach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2005, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, is handling the arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
