Ralph Gebhart was born the third child of five born to Orange and Opal (Brown) Gebhart; his siblings being: Oscar Evans Gebhart, Holly Gebhart, David Gebhart, and Helen Gebhart.

He was an industrious young man, working as a truck driver for R.H. Foster, and prior to that, he was employed by the Hammon garage. He still resided at home.

The angel of death came calling following a swimming outing held on Sunday, July 21, 1931, at Miller's Fork, in which he broke his neck. It is said that the pool into which the fatal dive was made was only about three feet in depth and that he must have struck his head squarely on the bottom, rendering him helpless on impact. His companions took him to the bank, the closest building, with paralysis from the point just below the shoulders down. However, he retained muscular control of his extremities with only the fingers showing impaired movements, so no one was sure that to do for him. He was taken to the Miami Valley hospital, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, on Tuesday, July 23, where while preparing for surgery, it was discovered that the fracture was in the fifth vertebra, which was also impairing the diaphragm, thus slowly stopping respirations. The young man, aged 25 years, 8 months, and 28 days old, remained conscious until the end.

Funeral services were held in the home of his parent's, officiated by Rev. Albert Beachler. Internment was made on July 25, 1931.
