Her father was an officer in President Madero's army, and when Madero was assassinated, the family ran across the border at Nogales, Arizona. She told her mother, "Bees are chasing us," but years later, watching a western on TV, she realized it was bullets, not bees.
She, her parents, brother Manuel, and sisters Teresa and Concha later came to San Diego and lived downtown across the street from the old Franklin School. Her mother worked at San Diego Steam Laundry, and her father worked in Baja, California, where her three older brothers joined him. She attended Franklin, Memorial, and San Diego High through tenth grade and then attended beauty college.
She met her husband, Warren Barnes, a handsome young sailor, on a blind date, and they were married in 1928. They built their home in Pacific Beach in 1948 and were the first two charter members of Pacific Beach Christian Church in 1949. Warren died in 1992, and their son Elmer Barnes in 2002.
She is survived by her daughter Eileen Farrar (Lloyd) of San Diego; grandsons Lloyd (Sherry) of Dumaguete City, Philippines, Jud (Harlynne) and Ian (Nancy) of San Diego; Gary Barnes and Simone Carrington of New York; great-grandchildren Joseph of Las Vegas, Michael of Dumaguete City, and Monica (J.T.) Simonsen of Reno and brother-in-law Larry R. Georgen of Florida.
She loved gardening, cooking, and going places. She loved everyone and was loved by all.
