OBITUARY: The Gridley Herald --- Posted ON INTERNET Jun 01, 2010 @ 05:03 PM --- Gridley, Calif. — A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery for Clifford R. Glaze, 96, a long time resident of Gridley, California. He passed away Monday, May 17, 2010, of natural causes in Oroville, California. Cliff was born April 10, 1914, in Hevner, Oklahoma. Cliff and Alma were married in 1933 in Antlers, Oklahoma, after growing up together in the same community, attending the same church and the same schools. Their history goes back so far, that Alma's mother, a midwife, delivered Cliff. They moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1936 where they operated a dairy. They moved to Bernalillo, near Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1938, where Cliff worked for the Santa Fe Northwestern Railroad as a mechanic and carpenter, and later for New Mexico Lumber and Timber, as a truck driver. Moving to Yuba City in 1942, Cliff worked as a carpenter helping to build Beale Air Force Base for about a year. He and Alma then moved briefly to Yuma, Arizona, where Cliff worked in construction on another Air Force Base. In 1944 they moved to Gridley, where Cliff worked in the orchards and eventually began his rice farming career working for Ed Owen. The couple bought their first home on Laurel Street in 1949, and later moved to Richvale in 1955, where Cliff managed the farming operations for Roy Parsons, and later for Ernie Hatch. In 1976, they moved ten miles west of Gridley where Cliff continued farming for Hatch until he retired in 1986. Cliff produced 31 consecutive years of successful rice crops. Upon retirement, Cliff and Alma bought a home on Sycamore Street in 1986, where they lived together until five weeks before his death, when he was admitted to the hospital. When asked about their life together, Alma was quick to point out, "He never once complained about something I cooked, he's been easy to live with. He has a great sense of humor." Over the years, Cliff and Alma have been active in the Gridley Assembly of God Church, Gideon's International and Senior Gleaners. Cliff was chairman of the Senior Citizens Club for seven years. Cliff and Alma enjoyed singing duets and also sang in a gospel quartet with Alma's brother and sister-in-law in various churches in the area. Cliff is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Alma Glaze of Gridley, CA; and by his three children: Shirley Brokaw Azim of Yuba City, CA, Michael & Roseanna Glaze of Oroville, CA, and Daniel & Elizabeth Glaze of Sacramento, CA. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Interment will be held at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel.
