August "Augie" Ernest Rebhuhn was
born to Adolf and Anna Werner Rebhuhn
on June 8, 1919 at a farm house
during a nighttime summer thunderstorm.
He was the second of four sons:
Paul, August, Ray and Robert.

Augie lived and worked in Pocahontas
and Buena Vista counties for most of
his life. In his early years he farmed with
his dad and brothers while working at
Superior Manufacturing, a grease gun
factory in Albert City. It was there that
he met Margie Hughes. They were married
at St. John Lutheran Church in rural
Albert City on Nov. 15, 1942. Three children
were born of their union: Dennis,
Kathleen and Dianne.

Augie worked for Superior Manufacturing
during the first few years of their
married life. During World War II he was
the supervisor of an ammunition plant
west of Albert City. In 1947 Augie and
Margie moved from Albert City to a
farm. He was a full time farmer, but continued
to work at the grease gun factory.
He also custom combined for area farmers
and baled hay and straw in his spare
time.

In the early 1950s Augie added
square dance calling to his list of accomplishments.
He and Margie traveled
many miles together over almost 20
years. They drove all over northern Iowa,
southern Minnesota, and eastern South
Dakota and Nebraska and made many
good friends. Augie loved to sing for the
dancers and he loved to watch his
beloved Margie out amongst their
friends, dancing away the night or teaching
new steps to someone.

In 1969 Augie and Margie moved
from the farm to Spencer when he
became production manager at Superior
Manufacturing-Witco. Kathleen and
Denny Eberle took over his farming
operation in 1971.

In 1976 Augie and son-in-law Mike
Hoyt went into the Culligan water business
together. He remained active there
until he retired in 1994.

Throughout his life, Augie was active
in his church, had fun fishing with friends
and family at their Leech Lake, Minn,
cabin and enjoyed the love and companionship
of his grandchildren, who called
him Papa. He enjoyed woodworking and
made a numbfer of beautiful grandfather
clocks for Margie and his children. He
could be heard whistling a tune and
singing wherever he went. And he loved
a good joke.

He missed Margie terribly after her
passing in 1986 and he went to join her,
finally, early in the morning of Tuesday,
August 29, 2000. There to greet him in
heaven were his parents and brothers,
Paul and Ray.

His warm hugs and gentle kisses,
quiet ways and abundant wisdom will be
greatly missed by his family.
