James Elzar Carell Sr was born on October 27, 1874 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of Elza Monroe Carell (1848-1900) and Martha R "Mattie" (Miller) Carell (ca 1855- ).

He was married to Josephine Dalton (ca 1874-1932), the daughter of William Dalton and Ellen ( -- ) Dalton.

An engineer for the Nashville Fire Department, he lived at 903 17th Avenue South, Nashville. James was 59 years old and the widow of Josephine when he died at home of a coronary thrombosis on January 13, 1934. Burial was three days later in Calvary Cemetery, Nashville.
