He was his parents' only child, and the second husband to Mary Ella Moore.
For a time, Alton was the Food Services Manager at the legendary Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis. Before that he had worked for the US Postal Service.
Alton played golf until a few years prior to his death, when his arthritis prevented him from properly holding the club. In addition to being in the church (Rebecca United Methodist) choir for most of his life, he was also the organ player, a duty which he fulfilled until his passing.
