Funeral Services To Be Monday Afternoon at 1
Mrs. Alice M. Hoyt, 95, of 238 South Appleton Ave., former assistant register of probate, died last night at the Chretien Rest Home.
Mrs. Hoyt was born in Arlington, Vt., daughter of David and Martha Hawley Crofut. She was educated in the District School, the parish school of St. James' Episcopal Church and at Burr & Burton Seminar in Arlington. Mrs. Hoyt came to Pittsfield in 1898 and the following years entered the employ of the Probate Court. Five years later she was appointed assistant register, after a special act of the Legislature was passed allowing a woman to hold that position. It was the first time there had been an assistant register of probate in Berkshire County. She retired July 9, 1931 at the age of 70.
Mrs. Hoyt was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and also retained her membership in St. James' Church of Arlington as her family had been closely associated with that church since its founding. Mrs. Hoyt was a member of the Woman's Auxiliary of St. Stephen's and of the King's Daughters.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Charles E. Canfield with whom she made her home for 34 years; and a son, Frederick R. Hoyt of this city, seven grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. A son George D. Hoyt died in 1946.
Services will be held at the Wellington Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 1. The Rev. Malcolm W. Eckel, rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Arlington, Vt. Cemetery.
