George D. Hoyt, City Milk Inspector, Dies
Former GE Employee Served City Since 1943
George D. Hoyt, 65, of 121 Howard Street, city milk inspector for the past three years and a retired General Electric employee died early this afternoon at House of Mercy. He underwent a gall bladder operation last week and was generally considered to be making good progress. His wife died suddenly of a heart attack about a month ago.
Mr. Hoyt joined the Health Department staff in November 1943, when Inspector Leslie Abell took a similar job with the State Department of Public Health. He was given a permanent civil service appointment early in 1944 when he scored a mark of 90 80 on an examination.
Although he spent most of his life in the employ of the General Electric-he was a Stanley Company worker before the GE came to Pittsfield-Hoyt always maintained an active interest in dairying. Even while a GE employee, he had a good-sized herd of milk producing cows. He also was interested in horse breeding and recently named a director of the Massachusetts Horse Show Council Inc.
Mr. Hoyt was retired from the West Lynn branch of the GE after 40 years service. He belonged to the Quarter Century Club and was a member of St. Stephen's Church. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Richard Birkett of Tyringham and Mrs. Joseph DiGiorges of Pittsfield; four grandchildren; also his mother, Mrs. Alice Hoyt; one sister, Mrs. C.E. Canfield and a brother, Fred R. Hoyt, all of this city.
The body reposes at the Wellington Funeral Home.
