Afton Duana Butler Jensen,80, of Rexburg, passed peacefully in her home on March 26, 2014 after succumbing to cancer. Duana never gave up and maintained a positive outlook through the many health challenges that she faced.

She was born in Archer, Madison County, Idaho on October 7, 1933. She is the daughter of Orland Glenn Butler and Afton Ellis. She was the first grandchild of Samuel Richard Butler and Lydia McIntier, and Henry Owen Ellis and Fanny Catherine Morgan. She married Melvin F. Jensen in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 28, 1952.

She was raised on a family farm in Lyman where she learned to work and overcome the various challenges that life presents. The oldest of 5 children, she was her father's first helper and her siblings' second mom. She attended school at Lyman and Burton Elementary Schools and graduated from Madison High School. She took some business courses at Idaho Falls Business College and began working as a secretary in Idaho Falls.

She also worked for First Security Bank in Rexburg and later transferred to the Logan, Utah Branch while Mel attended Utah State University. After 18 years of homemaking and raising her boys she went back to work for a finance company and later for Ricks College where she worked for 16 years.

Duana loved music and studied violin and singing. She performed with the high school orchestra and Ricks College Community Symphony Orchestra. She enjoyed singing in choirs, performing at special events, leading music, and had many opportunities to bless others with her musical talents. She also loved to read—especially the classics. She took many literature classes, collected books and discussed literature with anyone willing to listen. She attended book club regularly and valued her book friends greatly.

Church was a central part of her life. She loved attending primary, Sunday school, MIA, and firesides. She participated in ward plays, dances, Gold and Green Balls, reunions, and ward parties. She often gave up her lunch hour while working for Ricks College to attend religion classes. Much of her service in the church involved directing music. She served as ward chorister and choir director and was over music in the Stake Relief Society Board. She especially enjoyed working in the temple.

Above all else, she was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was filled with love and treasured each member of her family—from her ancestors to her great grandchildren. She felt blessed by their presence and cherished them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of gladness and she looked forward to their visits.

Duana was preceded in death by her infant daughter Suzanne, her mother and father, and her brother Glenn. She is survived by her husband, sons: Wayne (Marie), Wesley (Sheri), Shawn (Danalee), Ben (Kim), brothers: Lewis (Julie) Butler, Richard Butler, and sister Lisa (Lee) Griffiths, 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 2nd at the Rexburg 4th & 15th Ward Chapel with Bishop Brett Samson officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home and again from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sutton Cemetery.
