Peter Tuinstra was born in March 1894 in Chicago, the first of 16 children of Fokke alias Fred Tuinstra and Grietje alias Grace Boomsma, named for his grandfather Pieter alias Peter Tuinstra.

In June 1900 his father, dairy farmer Fred Quinstra (27 y, Holland, immigrated in 1891), his mother Grietje (25, Holland, immigrated in 1892), his siblings Haaie (4, born in February 1896 in Illinois), Roel (2, October 1897, Illinois) and Klaske (1, June 1899, Illinois) lived in Hyde Park Township, 99 Street, Ward 34, in the southern part of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Quite remarkable: their son Peter, born in May 1894 in Chicago, was not present then. Staying with relatives? Two houses further on his aunt Riemke Tuinstra DeVries lived with her husband and three children.

Peter Tuinstra married on 9 June 1915 in the Dutch truck farmers settlement Roseland, nowadays a southern neighborhood of Chicago, to Sadie Doran, born in Chicago too, Cook County, Illinois.

On 5 June 1917 Peter Tuinstra was residing with his wife and a child in the community of Franksville in eastern Racine County, and farming at L. Christiansen's farm, when he was administrated on a World War I Draft Registration Card.

In 1920 Peter Tuinstras (25 y, born in Illinois), his wife Sadie (25, Illinois), their sons Fred (3, Illinois) and Jacob (1, Wisconsin) lived in Ward 9 of the city of Racine, seat of Racine County, located on the shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Root River, in the southeastern part of Wisconsin.

In 1930 Peter Tuinstra (35), his wife Sadie (36), their sons Fred (14), Jacob (11), Harry (9, Wisconsin) and Charles (8, Wisconsin) lived in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1940 Peter Tuinstra (45, janitor at a church), his wife Sadie (46), their children Jacob (21, office clerk at a meatjacker), Harry (19, Illinois, machinist at a steel forge), Charles (18, Illinois) and Greta (9, Illinois) lived at an own home, worth $1600, at Lafayette Ave in Ward 9 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They lived 1n 1935 in the same house.

In 1942 Peter was still living at Lafayette Ave in Ward 9 of Chicago and employed by the Second Christian Reform Church at Perry Avenue, when he was administrated on a World War II Draft Registration Card.

Peter Tuinstra died in July 1953 at the age of 59 years in in the Presbyterian hospital at the western side of the city of Chicago from a heart ailment. He lived for 50 years in the Dutch truck farmers settlement Roseland, nowadays a southern neighborhood of Chicago. His widow Sadie died in December 1955 at the age of 61 years, very probably in Roseland too.

OBITUARY

Peter Tuinstra, 59, of 10635 Lafayette, a resident of this community for 50 years, died Tuesday, July 14, in the Presbyterian hospital. His death was caused by a heart ailment. He had been employed as a carpenter by the Sterling Lumber Company.
He was the husband of Sadie van Doorn; father of Fred, Jacob, Harry, Charles and Mrs. Greta ; son of Fred and Grace Tuinstra of Franksville, Wis.; and brother of Harry, Mrs. Clara Eisenga, Ralph, Mrs. Bessie , Mrs. Aggie Bruinsma, Richard, John, Mrs. Reka Schultz, Samuel, Mrs. Sue Johnson, and Henry. Thirteen grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Tuinstra was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Roseland, 106th place and Perry Avenue.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, July 17, at 1:30 o'clock in the Second Christian Reformed Church of Roseland with the Rev. Gerrit Hoeksema in charge. Mrs. Margaret Andersma was soloist and Richard L. Hoekstra was organist. Interment was in Chapel Hills Gardens South.
