Winifred Glee "Winnie" Thompson, 97, passed away Monday, Jan. 13 at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, IN. Winifred Blansett was born July 12,1916 to Noldo and Nan Blansett in Rural Randolph County, IN.

She graduated from McKinley High School as valedictorian of her class in 1934. In her sophomore year she participated in the state Latin contest at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Since graduation for 78 consecutive years, she did not miss an alumni banquet. After graduation she was a secretary for thirteen years at Peacock Insurance Agency in Winchester.

In 1943 she married Carl "Barney" Thompson and they lived on their farm in Randolph County. Carl retired from farming in 1991 and they moved to their home on East Franklin Street in Winchester. In 2008 they moved to a condominium at Summers Place, also in Winchester. Since the summer of 2012, Winifred and Carl have lived at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, IN. In June of 2013 they celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.

Winifred was an active member of the Winchester Friends Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Lynn, Indiana Order of Eastern Star #571 and served as Worthy Matron in 1965. After Lynn's merger with Winchester O.E.S. # 60, her membership continued. Winifred was a member of Delta Theta Taw Sorority of many years. She led a YMCA women's exercise (and social) group for years. Winifred and Carl enjoyed following the Winchester Community High School boys' and girls' basketball teams year after year.

Winifred cherished her many friendships. She loved gardening and flowers. She was passionate about helping others, frequently taking food and flowers to those who were ill, elderly or homebound. She also regularly visited residents in nursing homes.

One brother and two sisters preceded in in death. Survivors include her husband, Carl "Barney" Thompson, a resident of Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, IN., as well as a daughter, Jill Ash and two grandchildren, Nan and Carl Ash, all of Encinitas, CA., Survivors also include on nephew, Dr. Jack (Dianne) Mendleson of Mesa, Ariz.

Winifred's family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Friends Fellowship Community for the extraordinary loving and skilled care she received.

Memorial services will be at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, IN on Saturday, Feb. 1st at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Winchester Friends Church, 124
East Washington St., Winchester, IN 47394. Walker Funeral Home in Winchester has been entrusted with the arrangements.
