At birth Irving was named Isidore Harry Apfelgrun by his parents, Devorah "Dora" (Seif)and Israel Apfelgrun. As an adult, Isidore legally changed his name to Irving Green. Isidore had six siblings: Jacob; Ida, Esther, Minnie, Rose, and Blanche.

Isidore married Ethel Kaplan on February 21, 1937. In 1940 at the cost of $30, he legally changed his name to Irving Green. No one knows how he came up with it, but he nicknamed himself Raddis when his two children, Daniel and Richard, were young.

While in New York, the family's usual place of residence was the Bronx but they also resided for short periods of time in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Later in life Irving moved with his wife to Florida, where he remained until his death in 1994.

Irving was preceded in death by his parents and all six siblings. He was survived by his wife, Ethel; son Daniel (Joyce) of Nanuet, New York; and son Richard (Sandra)of Boca Raton, Florida; and two grandchildren of Upstate New York.
