GALVESTON - She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on
August 14,1915, to Lucious and Grace Chambers. She married JT Sanders on January 20, 1940, in Athens, Texas; they became residents of Galveston.

Martha was a certified Montessori instructor. She taught at the Bnai Brith Day School and Travis Academy in Galveston. She was a dedicated member of the Central Christian Church for 48 years, where she served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for both children and adults.

She began a life long commitment to the Masonic Fraternity in 1943, when she was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star; she became active at the local, state and national levels. She was elected Worthy Matron of Galveston Chapter No. 716 and Mizpah Chapter No. 2. She was appointed Grand Adah and Grand Examiner at Large for the Grand Chapter of Texas. Martha was also honored with two appointments by the General Grand Chapter. She served as presiding officer of Daughters of the Nile and the Social Order of the Beauceant.

Martha was a board member and past Mother Advisor of Galveston Assembly No. 9 and York Rite Assembly No. 269, Order of the Rainbow for Girls. As a long time resident of Galveston, Martha was active in the League of Women Voters and for many years served as a precinct judge. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as president of the Parent Teacher Association.

Mrs. Sanders is preceded in death by JT, her husband of 58 years; her parents Lucious and Grace Chambers; and her brothers George Alvah Chambers and Thomas Edgar Chambers.

Martha is survived by daughter, Barbara Ann Buckley
and husband James T. Buckley of Missouri City; her, grandchildren Brandi Buckley of Missouri City and Christopher Brennan Buckley of Houston; sister Irma Watt of La Habra, California; five nephews and one niece.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 22, 1998, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Joseph Levy Memorial Chapel, with an Order of Eastern Star service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday, May 23, 1998, at 1:00 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 27th Street and Avenue O 1/2, Galveston, Texas 77550. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights
Templar Eye Foundation or the Eastern Star Estoral Fund.
