GALVESTON - JT Sanders, age 86, passed away Sunday,
March 1,1998, at a UTMB hospital in Galveston.

He was born in Murchison, Texas, on December 11,1911, to Walter and Mary Jeanette "Nettie" Sanders. Mr. Sanders grew up in Athens, Texas. He married Martha Elizabeth Chambers on January 21, 1940, in Athens, they became residents of Galveston. During WWII he worked at Todd's Shipyard. JT became a certified electrician and was a member of then International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He then worked as a motion picture operator at the State theater in downtown Galveston, he was a life member of Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Operators.

In 1961, he received a Bachelor of Laws degree. JT served as past president of The Traveller's Protection Association. Mr. Sanders was a dedicated member of the Central Christian Church for 48 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and deacon. He also served as an elder in the church for 31 years. JT began a lifelong commitment to the Masonic fraternity in 1942, when he was raised in Harmony Lodge No. 6 AF. & AM. During his life he served as past master of Harmony Lodge No. 6 AF. & A.M.; district Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas; pasfpresiding officer of all York Rite Bodies; past .presiding officer of all Scottish Rite Bodies; member of the Red Cross of Constantine; member of the Holy Royal Arch Knights Templar Priests; past Grand Commander, Grand Commandery of Texas, Knights Templar of Texas.

Mr. Sanders became an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1947. He was elected to serve as Worthy Patron of Galveston Chapter No. 716, Order of the Eastern Star, in 1956. JT was installed and served as Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Texas, Order of the Eastern Star, in 1968-69. He served on various committees for the Grand Chapter of Texas throughout his Eastern Star service. In 1997, he was appointed as a member of the Knight Templar Eye Foundation Committee for the General Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Sanders had a lifelong commitment as a member of the Kniglit Templar Eye Foundation throughout his Masonic journey. He was an active noble of El Mina Shrine Temple. Other recognitions included the Orders of the Golden and Silver Trowel of Texas; Order of High Priesthood of Texas, The Royal Order of Scotland; Super Excellent Master R.&S.M.; Texas York Rite Collage No. 14; Texas Lodge of Research; Knights of the York Cross of Honor; and the Grand Cross of Color degree, Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by his parents and
brothers; Millord and Delmas Sanders.

JT is survived by Martha, his wife of 58 years; daughter, Barbara Ann Buckley and husband James T. Buckley, of Missouri City; his grandchildren Brandi Elise Buckley, of Missouri City, and Christopher Brennan Buckley, of Houston; brother Gurley Sanders; sister Maudine Rodgers, both of Athens; and three nieces and two nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 4, 1998, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with an Eastern Star Service at 7 pm in the Joseph Levy Memorial Chapel.

Services will be held Thursday, March 5, 1998, at 1 p.m., at the Central Christian Church on 27th Street and Ave.
O-1/2, Galveston, Texas with the Rev. John Bain. Masonic graveside services will be conducted at Galveston Memorial Park by brothers of Harmony Lodge No. 6 AF&AM.

Pallbearers will be brothers of Harmony Lodge No. 6
A.F.&A.M. The honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Elders of the Central Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights
Templar Eye Foundation in his memory.
