John Kelley, Last Harness Maker In Edina, Died Friday In Hospital
John Kelley, 89 years old and the last harness maker in Edina, died at 11:45 o'clock Friday morning, March 5, 1965, at the Gibson Hospital here where he had been in failing health since December 1964.
Funeral services were at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Allen L. Vancil of Edina officiating. Burial was in the Linville Cemetery here.
He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Florence Parcell, whom he married April 23, 1901, and two sons, John B. Kelley of Columbia and Charles R. Kelley of Edina, also a granddaughter, Joyce Kelley, of Edina.
Mr. Kelley was a son of John and Katherine Golden Kelley and was a life-long resident of Edina having been born here May 1, 1875. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Kelley moved into the present home in the east part of Edina where they spent almost 64 years of married life and celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at open house April 23, 1961.
Before Mr. Kelley's retirement, he had been a deputy sheriff and township constable for a number of years and was associated wih the Knapp Harness Shop as long as it was in business and then with Frank (word smudged out) until his shop ceased operation.
His parents, a brother, Judge W. A. Kelley, and two sisters, Katherine, Mrs. Ben Krueger, and Miss Mary Jane Kelley, also preceded him in death.
Those from a distance attending funeral services were Arthur Hunolt of Trenton, Cecil Green of Shelbyville, Mr. and Mrs. Hartley Richardson and grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Martin O. Behymer and Mrs. Clark Naylor of Columbia, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Marquette of Newark and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Marquette of Memphis.
