Robert Townsend was born about 1512 in Ludlow, Shropshire, England. He was the second son of Sir Roger Townsend, Esq. and Anne de Brewse. Robert studied law at the Society of Lincoln's Inn and with his father attended the Duke of Norfolk at the reception of Lady Anne of Cleves, who married Henry VIII on January 1, 1539. Robert was appointed the King's Sergeant at law in 1541, and knighted at Hampton Court in 1545. That same year he was made Lord Chief Justice of Chester. He also held that post under King Edward VI and Queen Mary. Robert married Alice Poppy, daughter of Robert Poppy, Esq., on October 1, 1534, probably in Ludlow. Robert died in Ludlow, Shropshire, on February 8, 1556. He was entombed in the high chancel of St. Laurence's Church in Ludlow, in an altar tomb. Around the coping of the top of the tomb is the inscription: "Here lyeth the body of Sir Robert Towneshende, Knight, Chief Justice of the Councill in the Marches of Wales and Chester, and Dame Alice, his wife, daughter and one of the heirs of Robert Poppy, Esq., who had between them 12 children, 6 sons & 6 daughters, lawfully begotten."
