In the late 1800s Norway was ruled by the Swedish crown. As the years passed near the turn of the century an independence movement gained steam across the Norwegian countryside. Norway and Sweden had a past rife with conflict and war between the two nations. Internationally Sweden had usually sided with Prussia, later Germany in various disputes and conflicts whereas the Norwegians mostly felt allegiance with the British. It appeared a war for independence from Sweden might be looming in early 1900s. This may have played a role in their immigration to the U.S.A. however, their father Knute's second marriage to Elen Valskar after Agota's death in 1894 and the birth of two "half" sisters, Aagot K. Nerheim (1898) and Selma Amanda Nerheim (1902) may have played a large part in the decision as well. The five Nerheim children's late Mother Agota had two brothers and a sister whom immigrated to Story City, Iowa, U.S.A. at least 25 years prior to 1905. They were Amund O. Severeide (July 31, 1851-April 20, 1920), Lars Larson Severeide (Nov, 24, 1849-Feb. 20, 1915) and Ingrid L. Severeide (Dec.4, 1846-April 1,1933).
The oldest four of the five surviving children of Knut L. and Agota L. Nerheim boarded various steamships in Stavanger, Norway and never came back, even though Norway gained its independence in 1905. Ragnhild (later nicknamed Randi) was the oldest and first to immigrate into the United States through Ellis Island in 1898.
Soon after arriving in the United States, Ragnhild found her way to Iowa and was wed to Severt M. Jacobson on January 22, 1903. The young newlyweds set up housekeeping in Amsterdam, Hancock County, Iowa. The couple had six children, Arthur J. (b. Nov. 12,1903), Jeannette Mildred (b. April 21, 1907), Clara Almina (b. Oct. 27,1910), Selma R. (b. 1914), Lillian M. (b. 1917) and Orlin Jenning (b. 1922).
Ragnhild and Severt celebrated the wedding of their second child and first daughter Jeannette Mildred to Joseph Sanford Olson on December 29, 1926. Unfortunately ten years later, the family dealt with the death of youngest son, Orlin Jenning. However, the couple enjoyed a number of grandchildren as the 1940s came and went in the lovely Iowa farmlands.
Ragnhild Jacobson passed away on August 16, 1954. She was 71 years of age.
