In the 1880 US census Chesley is living in Amador county California with his wife, Mary A. and son John C. Mary was born in Oregon in about 1845. John C was born in California in about 1877.

In the 1900 US census, Chesley is shows as widowed. He is living next door to a Joseph ILLINGSWORTH, wife Elizabeth, son Clarence. Joseph is a machinist for the railroad.
