Marie Overturf Dies -Following Long Illness

Miss Marie Overturf, age 46, died early Wednesday, August 21, 1946, in a Grand Island hospital, after an illness of 11 months. Her home was at 104 East Seventh.

Born in Edgar, Nebraska, February 20, 1900, Miss Overturf was the oldest daughter of Allen and Jennie Overturf. She was graduated from high school at Fairfield, Nebraska, in 1917, later was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan university (sic) with a A B degree, and received her Master of Arts degree at Columbia university (sic).

Miss Overturf taught school in Clay county (sic) for five years and then came to Grand Island in 1923. She taught here continuously until her illness last fall, most of the time in Walnut Junior High school. She was active in school affairs, was a past president of the Grand Island Teachers' club, and was elected district secretary of the Nebraska Education Association last fall. She had been a member of the Methodist church since childhood, and was secretary of the board of the First Methodist church here at the time of her death. Miss Overturf was a past president of Chapter EH, PEO, a past president of the Business and Professional Women's club, past member of the YWCA board, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Surviving are her father, Allen Overturf; two brothers, Wayne Overturf of Omaha and Wendell Overturf of St Louis; two sisters, Nadine Overturf and Mrs. Walter Geddes, Grand Island; her grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Overturf of Ong, Nebraska; four nephews and one niece. Her mother died in 1939, and a sister in her youth.

The funeral was held at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, with the Rev. W. A. Hubbard officiating. Burial was in the Grand Island cemetery (sic) - - Grand Island Independent.
