Vernell Ratliff Franklin was born on May 30, 1919 in Llano County to Jesse W. and Della Mae Ratliff. She passed away on Jan. 4 in Cedar Park.
She married Charlie Allen Franklin on Sept. 25, 1937 in Burnet and he preceded her in death on June 10, 2012. They would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Sept. 25, 2012.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and six brothers. She is survived by son Alton Franklin and wife Margie; daughter Jo Ann Tyree and husband Earl; grandchildren Jimmy Tyree and wife Louise, Michael Franklin and wife Anne, Sherry Tyree Miller and husband
Mark, Terry (Franklin) McKinney and husband Bo, Sonya (Tyree) Dixon and husband Brent, Tamara Franklin, and David Franklin; great-grandchildren Ashton (Miller) Vaughan and husband Tanner, Stacey Tyree, Madalyn Miller, Jake Franklin, Faith Franklin, Kailey Miller, Parker Franklin, Max McKinney, Sam Franklin, Drew Dixon, Grace McKinney, Payton Dixon, Luke Miller, and Hadley Dixon; sister-in-law Eula Mae Ratliff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Franklin and her husband lived in the Bertram area until their children had graduated from high school. Charlie worked for a farmer and later for the Railroad until 1958.
During their years in Bertram, they were active members of First Baptist Church and Franklin taught Sunday school in the children's class. She loved and cared for her family with all her heart as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She was a very talented seamstress, sewing clothes for her children, then wedding dresses for Jo Ann and Margie within a 4-month period of time. She continued to sew for her granddaughters, making matching dresses and bonnets.
She was a dedicated grandma and great-grandma, and would spend time with her grandchildren playing dominoes, painting cuptowels, and making crafts with the hot glue gun. She enjoyed making trips to Hobby Lobby and Garden Ridge with her family. She was just as involved down to the last great-grandchild, who she would play catch with from her recliner.
Franklin always made the holidays special for her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from the special meals and desserts she prepared, to her Christmas decorations including the plastic Frosty and Santa. All of the grandkids fondest memories are of Christmas Eve at Wyatt's Cafeteria and then our annual trip down to the capitol to see the decorations. By the time we arrived back to their house, Santa had mysteriously come while we were gone.
She loved to work in their yard and had numerous flowers blooming all the time. She and Charlie both worked in the yard and vegetable garden as long as their health permitted and canned many vegetables and preserves. She passed on her love for flowers and gardens to her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and everyone looked forward to her making her dressing and beans.
The couple also enjoyed going on trips down to Canyon Lake where they had a place and spent time with S.M. and Margie Guthrie. They also made frequent visits to Llano to see her sister
Opal, which always included a trip to the Dollar Store and Dairy Queen. The Franklins were both members of the First Baptist Church of Leander.
