Philemon Williams' grave is located in the Farmer Community near Hindsville, in the NE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 NE 1/4, Section 29, Township 17 North, Range 27 West. According to a letter written in 1959 by his granddaughter, Ruth Gosnell Pate, Philemon Williams who was at home from the Civil War on sick leave, was taken from his home after men came to his house in November 1862, and was shot. His wife, Emily SHERROD Williams found his body the next morning and she and their sons buried Philemon in their garden. Emily planted cedar trees at the head and foot of his grave. In 1929 the cedar trees were over 50 feet tall and still marked his grave when Philemon's daughter, Emily, and his granddaughter, Ruth Pate, visited the grave. Aerial views of the area in 1942 show buildings, a square fenced area, and what is believed to be tall cedar trees casting shadows. The area has been cleared at some point in time to make pastureland, and today the cedar trees and buildings are all gone. However older people of the community have related that they do remember hearing that a Confederate soldier was buried in that area where an old homestead used to be.
