This photo shows a plateau at the top of a flight of steps up from road level below the bridge. Many members of the Montgomery family are interred here. Most graves in this, the most visible and cleared part of the cemetery, are 19th century.
Over the ensuing decades, the cemetery expanded into the adjacent hills. Many later generations and residents of Montgomery and several nearby communities are buried here. Many burials are members of families who had recently arrived from Europe, in particular Italy, England and Scotland, coming for work in area mines. Two African American churches, one Methodist and a Baptist, were established "on the hill on the south side of the turnpike," according to J.T. Peters' History of Fayette County. Some of the burials are members of these congregations.
Well beyond the level shown in this photo there are graves, many inside walled terraces, all the way to the top of the mountain. Some are completely overgrown and many markers are no longer legible.
