The original Noeton Baptist Church and its cemetery were located on the Holston River in the Noeton community. Before Cherokee Dam was completed in 1941 and Cherokee Lake completely inundated Noeton, the church was moved to higher ground at its present location. The TVA survey of the original cemetery, which was next to the original church building, recorded 46 graves. Of those, twelve graves were removed to other nearby cemeteries in Grainger and Hamblen Counties, thirty graves which could not be identified were removed to the new Noeton Cemetery, across the road from the relocated church, and four graves were requested by relatives to remain and were not moved.
In addition to the unidentified graves from the original Noeton Church Cemetery, fourteen graves from flooded Wester Cemetery in Grainger County were relocated into the new Noeton Church Cemetery. TVA survey plats of the reinterrment cemeteries show that there was already a cemetery called Murray Cemetery next to the location of the new Noeton Cemetery. Murray Cemetery was also used as a reinterrment cemetery for eleven graves from flooded Cobb, McAnally, and Tilley Cemeteries in Grainger County. According to the TVA plat of the Murray and Noeton Reinterrment Cemeteries, the reinterrments into the new Noeton Cemetery were mostly placed on the northeast side, and the reinterrments into Murray Cemetery were mostly placed on the southeast side. However, other reinterrments into both Murray and Noeton were placed in the middle. The old and new burying grounds continued to be called Murray Cemetery, but eventually the two cemeteries grew together and became indistinguishable, now under the care of Noeton Missionary Baptist Church.
