The Rev. Francis W. Broderick, O.S.B., 89, a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey, Atchison, KS, for almost 67 years, died April 20, 1998, in an Overland Park, KS hospital.

He was born in Omaha, NE, February 2, 1909. After high school studies in Atchison, he attended St. Benedict's College in Atchison and was graduated in 1933 with a bachelor's degree in English. He studied theology at St. Benedict's Abbey from 1933-1937. He became a vowed member of the abbey on July 11, 1931, and was ordained a priest on May 30, 1936.

He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education at the University of Illinois in 1943. He studied biology at that university the summers of 1941 and 1942, and philosophy at Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., in 1950.

He taught at Maur Hill High School, Atchison, KS, from 1938 to 1942, and was chaplain there in 1941 and 1942. He was principal of Maur Hill in 1947 and 1948. He was chaplain of Lillis High School, Kansas City, MO, from 1942 to 1947 and again from 1966 to 1973. He taught at Bishop O'Hara High School, Kansas City, MO, from 1975 to 1984.

Beginning in 1948, Father Broderick served as chaplain of Mount St. Scholastic College, Atchison, KS, and taught philosophy. He was vice president of the college from 1950 to 1959. He was chaplain at St. Joseph's Hospital, Kansas City, MO, from 1973 to 1974.

He was assigned as an assistant pastor at St. James Church, Kansas City, MO, from 1942 to 1947; associate pastor of Christ the King Church, Kansas City, MO, from 1974 to 1975; part time assistant at St. John Francis Regis Church, Kansas City, MO, from 1975 to 1982. He assisted at St. Matthew Church, Kansas City, MO from 1982 to 1984. From 1984 to 1997, he was associate pastor at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Seneca, KS. He retired in 1998.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Benedict's Abbey Church, Atchison, KS. Burial was in the Abbey cemetery.
