Born in Sumter District, a son of Julius Benson and Emily Hatfield Watts.

A soldier of the Confederate States of America, he died in a Confederate Hospital in Columbia after suffering critical wounds.

He is buried in an unmarked grave in Columbia, SC, probably in a section of Elmwood Cemetery but not proven at this date (2015).

A history of the Brewington Presbyterian Church in Clarendon County shows that he was baptized by Pastor W. W. Wilson on May 31, 1857.
