Ronnie as his family called him was born to Haywood & Catherine Wright. He grew up on a 15 acre farm in the Oakhaven area of Shelby County. He had one brother, Haywood Wright, Jr. who was just 1 year, 2 weeks older than he was.
Ronnie loved Quail hunting and fishing. He and his dad, Haywood Sr. often went on hunting and fishing trips together.
As a child he won an award from Oakhaven Baptist Church for attendance of 3 years without missing a Sunday.
He graduated from Oakhaven High School in 1965. After being hired by American Airlines to work out of the new Memphis Airport in October of 1965, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966.
After boot camp he was stationed in Germany. I don't remember the name of the place he was stationed but it was the same place Elvis was stationed.
While he was there he became pin pals with me, Lynn Waldrip. We wrote letters for about a year, usually I wrote three to his one. I always tried to make sure he got at least one letter every week. He asked me out in the last letter I got before he returned home in April, 1968. It was love at first site for both of us I guess. We were married on June 1, 1968.
He had returned to his job at American Airlines about 4 weeks after he returned home. His mom & dad gave us the down payment for a house for a wedding present and we moved into a home in Oakhaven on Beauchamp the day after our wedding. We had our honeymoon in the Spring of 1969, a trip to California to visit Disneyland, a place we both wanted to go since childhood.
In January of 1971 we welcomed our first daughter Katie (Katherine F. Mathews). In September of 1972 we welcomed our second daughter Kristie (Kristie W. Miles). I'm sad to say our marriage ended in divorce in 1983.
Ronnie remarried at one point after transfering to Texas. I'm not sure how long that union lasted.
After Shelby was born, our first grand daughter, we were able to put aside our differences and become friends. We talked on the phone a few times a year and even exchanged emails. He even volenteered us (without asking me first) to baby sit so Kristie & her husband could have an evening out when we both attended Shelby's birthday party in Atlanta one year.
Kristie had our 2 oldest grand daughters, Shelby & Kelly.
Katie had our youngest grand daughter Ashley. Saddly Ronnie did not get to live long enough to see Katie give birth to his little grand son Joey in 2005.
