John was the son of Darling Dowling and Sophia Davis. He served as a private in Company F, 8th Florida Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. enlisting at Sanderson, FL in May 1862. He was captured at Gettysburg and kept in Fort Delaware and Fort Lookout Prisons until the end of the war. He returned home and farmed there until he died sept 17, 1912. His wife , Sarah Johns Dowling, died Nov 27, 1915. Both are interred in the North Prong Cemetery in Baker County, FL.
