Bertha married Enoch Sydney Padgett of Oklahoma in 1909 and is seen in the 1910 census with Enoch and their infant son Edgar Sampson. Bertha, Enoch, and Edgar, moved to Skagit County, Washington with some of the Padgett family. In 1911 Bertha gave birth to a daughter, Beulah Esther in 1913, twin sons, Leray Walter and Leroy Winston and in 1915, Everett William was born. By the end of 1916, the family had moved back to Ada, Oklahoma; evidenced by the 1917 WW1 Draft card of Enoch, and the death of their eldest son Edgar in Feb of 1917. On December 3, 1917, Bertha gave birth to another son, Lester Wayne Padgett. October 19 1918, Enoch and his youngest child Lester died from the Spanish Flu and three days later on Oct 22nd, 5 year old, Leray died from the Flu, as well.
In 1919 Bertha moved to Hopkins County, Texas with her 3 remaining children, where her sister Mattie lived with her husband John Walter Gardner. Bertha by 1920 had married John Gardner's brother James Thomas Gardner and during their marriage, they had 4 sons, Arlie, Doyle, JT, and Darryl, and one daughter Wanda. By the mid to late 1930's, James T and Bertha had divorced, after which Bertha married William D Gooden; she died in Dallas on Feb 11, 1957. She was proceeded in death by two husbands Enoch Padgett and William Gooden, and 5 sons, Leray, Edgar, Lester, and Everett Padgett, as well as her youngest child, Darryl Gardner who died on Dec 30,1931; only 5 weeks old.
