Brother Walter Donald Landwehr, 85, a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey, Atchison, KS, died February 5, 1999, in an Atchison Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born August 20, 1913, in Topeka, KS, and attended parish schools ther and Topeka Catholic High School.

After training as a novice monk he spoke monastic vows at the abbey on September 12, 1934. For many years in the monastic community he did carpentry, farm work, and other manual labor, including truck driving. From 1965 to 1967, he did maintenance work at Maur Hill Prep School, Atchison. From 1967 to 1989 he served as a chauffeur. He retired in March 1989. At the time of his death, he had been a monk of the abbey more than 64 years.

He enjoyed operating a citizen band radio. While serving as a chauffeur, he spent two years rfinishing all of the pews in the nave of the Abbey Church.

He had no close surviving relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Isabelle Landwehr; and brother, Rev. William Landwehr, who died February 9, 1981.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at the St. Benedict's Abbey Church, Atchison, KS. Burial was in the Abbey cemetery.
