A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at St. Francis Catholic Church, in Humphrey, with Father John Andrews celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the St. Francis Parish Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Foltz Zuerlein Post 80 and VFW Post 7725 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the church with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a scripture service at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church or the Humphrey Volunteer Fire Department.
Ervin was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Cornlea, to Ewald and Margaret (Koopman) Nissen and attended Humphrey Public School, graduating in 1942. He entered the U.S, Army on April 13, 1943, and served in World War II. He was stationed in Europe with the 14th Armored Division and was honorably discharged on Feb. 3, 1946.
Ervin returned to Humphrey and on Aug. 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Krebs at St. Francis Catholic Church. Ervin worked with his father in the blacksmithing business in Humphrey and later owned and operated his own business, Nissen Machine and Welding, until his retirement in 1990.
A past recipient of the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award, Ervin was a leader in the community. He spent 35 years as a member of the Humphrey Fire Department, including 15 years as the Fire Chief, served 15 years on the Humphrey City Council, and also served on the St. Francis Parish Council. His hobbies included hunting, trapshooting, gardening and fishing. He was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Northeast Nebraska Blacksmith and Welding Association.
Ervin is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (Steve) Anderson, of Algona, Iowa; daughter, Becky (Mike) Coe, of Merced, Calif.; son, Jim (Ruth) Nissen, of La Crescent, Minn.; son, Jeff (Theresa) Nissen, of Tampa, Fla.; daughter, Barbara (Ernie) Parker, of League City, Texas; daughter, Nancy (Ray) Fuchs, of Lincoln; daughter, Debbie (Paul) Redlinger, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Mary Clare (Tim) Sullivan, of Lincoln; 19 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Bob (Bernie) Nissen, of N.Y.; brother-in-law, Warren (Edith) Krebs, of Salina, Kan.; cousins; nieces; and nephews.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, Ewald and Margaret Nissen; wife, Mary Ann Nissen, in 2001; infant son, Ervin Nissen Jr.; brother, Leonard Nissen; and sister, Lorraine Longacre.
The family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan Society Center for the quality care they provided and to friends in Humphrey for their support.
