He was born on the family farm in Berne, Adams County, Indiana, on February 10, 1886 and his mother died 4 days later. Arthur was raised partly by his father and his second wife, Pauline Ida (Lehmann) Harris but spent most of his childhood in the home of his mother's parents. His father died in 1904.
Arthur married Adah Mae Lynch (who also lost her mother during infancy) on his 23rd birthday, February 10, 1909, in Jay County, Indiana. They would raise seven children, Addie L, Josie Olive, Lawrence L, Walter Davie, Richard Eugene, Arthur Marion and Joann.
Arthur and Ada lived most of their lives in and around Benton Harbor, Berrien County, Michigan.
