Joseph M1 Anna Rebecca Plankinton. Marriage to Joseph Filmore PARKER Sr 31 Aug 1876 — Age: 20 West Chester, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA by Rev. Joseph S. Evans; Witnesses: Mrs. Jos. Evans, Genevieve Baker. Charles Smith, Sr., a miller, and Will Smith, Jr., who introduced them in 1875. Anna and Sister, Martha, were visiting the Smiths. (N-E Corner of Darlington. Anna 21/Joseph 19 - Baptist Church Darlington and Union Streets).
-----------------------------------------------------------
During the United States of America Centennial Year of 1876, Joseph and Anna Rebecca attended the World's Fair Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Officially known as the "International Exhibition of Arts, Manufacturers and Products of the Soil and Mine," the Centennial Exhibition, the first major World's Fair to be held in the United States, opened on May 10, 1876 on a 285-acre tract of Fairmount Park overlooking the Schuylkill River. The Handwork Family has possession of their souvenir Gillinder & Sons Clear Glass Colonial Slipper Shoe.
------------------------------------------------------------
Joseph began working when he was about 13 years old or younger. His English-born Father, Joseph Parker, was killed in the American Civil War. Joseph worked for Hoopes Brother and Darlington for over 40 years as a Wheelwright/Wheel Maker/Hub Turner. (Either different terminology used in various U.S. Census records and/or possibly actual varying jobs' titles.)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Joseph and Anna Rebecca had six children, three of whom died young, and one of whom was this writer's Paternal Grandmother. {Lillian Dell (nee Parker); Adoptive Maiden Name: Tompkins; M1 John Kendig Handwork, Widowed; and M2 Lynn Henry "Hank" LeBaron.}

The six children were Emma Webster Parker (1878-1952) (Mrs. Claude Modie Weaver); Laura May Parker (1881-1952) (Mrs. Norman Messer Wood); Anna Rebecca Parker (1883-1892); Lillian Dell "Lily Dell" Parker/Tompkins (1888-1968) (see M1 & M2 above); Joseph Filmore Parker Jr (1890-1893) and Hariett Ingram "Hattie" Parker (1891-1893).
-----------------------------------------------------------
Joseph had much sadness in his life with the deaths of three of his precious children and then his young wife, Anna Rebecca, 3 Mar 1892, from Tuberculosis. She died "in her 37th year." His last child, Hattie, died from Pneumonia very shortly after his wife died. Another sadness was having to give up his two youngest daughters to Adoption, Lily Dell [by William H. and Ellie A. (nee Greenfield) Tompkins], and Hattie [by Joaquin B. & Kate (nee Dutton) Matlack]. Joseph worked full-time and could not care for them. The two older girls stayed in the home, attended school and were okay alone until he returned from work. I imagine some neighbors kept watch over them as well. The Adoptive Parents were known to Joseph in West Chester, so he knew they were in good homes.
-----------------------------------------------------------
This writer {Janet Handwork-Spencer} has several letters from Joseph to his daughter, Lillian, so they did have a relationship. He wrote to her while in the Chester County Hospital for a long period of time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Joseph then married Emily Elizabeth Elanora/Eleanora (nee Jaquett/e) Wetherill, a Widow with three children. He and Emily had two more children together, Carl Parker and Adelia "Delia" Parker.
-----------------------------------------------------------
According to the symbol on Joseph's headstone, he was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge. Three ovals linked together with one letter in each oval: "F", "L" and "T", which stand for "Friendship", "Love" and "Truth".
