On 12 Jul 1861 James mustered into service with Company F, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 19 years, 1 month and 19 days old.

On 30 Oct 1861 in "The Worcester Spy", Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, James S. Nichols was included, with 304 other men, among "The Killed, Wounded and Missing of the Fifteenth Regiment," after Ball's Bluff.

On 20 Jan 1862 in "The Worcester Daily Spy", Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, James S. Nichols was mentioned among the released prisoners.

On 15 Apr 1862 James ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts due to disability.

He applied for a veteran's pension on 24 Mar 1863.

On 21 Nov 1867 James, 25, married Adelaide Bartlett, 21, daughter of Marshall and Sarah P. (Kendrick) Bartlett, at North Brookfield, MA, in a first marriage for both. They had two daughters.

James died on 17 Oct 1899 at Pepperell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, of heart disease. He was 57 years, 4 months and 24 days old.

On 27 Nov 1899 Adelaide received a widow's pension.
