Engineer aboard C-124 Globemaster II
#50-0100. He was one of 87 killed when
the transport crashed on liftoff from
Larson Air Force Base, Moses Lake,
Washington.
It was the deadliest aviation accident in
history at that time. The airplane was
departing for Kelly Air Force Base in
San Antonio, during "Operation Sleigh Ride"
to take military personnel home for
Christmas during the Korean War.
An investigation would later determine
the pilots inadvertently failed to release
the wind gust locks on the rudder and
vertical stabilizers, causing a loss of
control after takeoff.
