Son of John and Louisa Knight.

On 12 Aug 1860 William, 22, married Sarah J. Kelley, daughter of William Kelley, at Ludlow, Hampden County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.

On 8 Aug 1862 William, a moulder, mustered into service with Company C, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Holyoke, Massachusetts. He was 24 years, 5 months and 4 days old.

On 18 May 1864 in the "Worcester Spy", Worcester, MA, William was noted among the wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness.

On 28 Jul 1864 William mustered out of the 15th Massachusetts due to expiration of term of service.

William died on 18 Jul 1874 at Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. He was 36 years, 4 months and 14 days old.

"The town authorities have recently set thirty-four tablets over graves of deceased Union soldiers buried there. The town's roll of honor includes fifty-six names, but the other twenty-two graves have been provided with headstones by friends.
The tablets are of zinc bronze, 26 inches in height, with raised letters and bearing a design including the flag and seal of the United States. The names of the deceased thus honored....
