He was taken prisoner at Ball's Bluff on October 21, 1861 and was held at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA. He was paroled in mid-late February 1862 and returned home to Leicester.
He died of consumption contracted as a prisoner of war, and his grave stone carries the note that he was "Starved at Libby Prison."
Note: William was the first and youngest of three Davis brothers to die in Co. E of the 15th Massachusetts.
In the autumn of 1862, his brother Alfred W. Davis died as a result of wounds at the Battle of Antietam. He is buried there.
Two years later in May 1864, his brother George P. Davis died at the Battle of the Wilderness.
